Naika’s Top Nine Favorite Power Ranger Suits from the Saban Era (1993 – 2001)

Before I go deeper into some of the Power Ranger seasons that I’ve either re-watched or have watched for the first time, I thought I would just touch base on one of the most important aspects of the series, and that’s the Ranger suits (or costumes).  Appearance is a big deal for any sort of tokusatsu show, and Power Rangers / Super Sentai is no exception to this rule.  Since I’ve only watched the first 9 seasons of the first Saban era, I will only focus on those particular outfits.  None of the costumes I list here are ones I hate, but there are many that I like more than others and I will do my best to list out the reasons why, so let’s start with #9.

It’s Just a Thriller: Arsenal vs. Leicester City (2/14/2016)

welbeck leicester

My heart was in my throat for 95 minutes as I watched Arsenal duke it out with League leaders Leicester City.  I’m not going to go for the specifics of the match but it was a roller-coaster of emotions for me as Welbeck came on to nod in the winning goal.  From elation to tears, I couldn’t believe it.  Simply put, football can be a beautiful thing where you ride a tidal wave of feelings from beginning to end.  Despair from Vardy’s dive to pure love for the Cannon on your badge as Danny ran into the crowds for his first goal in forever.  It’s moments like that where legends rise, and I hope for Danny and Arsenal, it will happen.  On to the next game gents!

One Hundred

I occasionally wonder what was the whole point in making this blog.  Part of me thinks that it was a way to flesh out how confounded I was when I met my GF to be.  Part of me also thinks it was because GrumpyGrad inducted me to vestiges of WordPress.  Or maybe I slowly realized that the jig was up for my YouTube account and this was my back-up plan.  Nevertheless, I have many people to thank for helping me keep this small refuge of utter nonsense up and running, so here goes.

To GrumpyGrad, thanks for introducing me to WordPress.  It’s a lovely place that allows me to live my dream of having my own site, albeit indirectly.  You’ve been a massive supporter of my writing and of me and my family personally and I wish you all the best in your endeavors.  If only you would return to writing again old friend.

To my brother and parents, you’ve always been fond of me and I thank you all for being such wonderful people.  My brother in particular has been a hero to me in many ways and I am glad to say that he’s shaken some of his concerns with the outside world and is striving to look for work in full force and I will push him on for as long as it takes until he gets something.  Anything.  If there’s any divine force that can help me repay the kindness and love my brother’s given me, please pay it back by getting him a stable job.

To my former YouTube colleagues, it’s nice to see a few of you drop by here.  That I’ve been sought out makes me feel appreciated despite my low subscriber number.  My YouTube years were great and provided me some much needed comfort away from some of the mundane aspects of Florida.  Nevertheless, the Sunshine State does have some perks, but believe me, they aren’t so obvious.

And lastly to the most important dedication, and that’s to my lovely GF.  I look in shame sometimes that this is the same lady who I pinned and lamented on, who confounded me yet astounded me on this very blog.  That she’s read my blog and has even forgiven me about writing about her speaks volumes yet making her mine was only the beginning.  You have to fight to keep what you love most and staying together was, in many ways, a tempest in its own right.  We’ve survived the fear of unemployment, moving, argument after argument, illness and now distance yet we are still together.  I don’t think that says much about me, but it speaks much on her.  Thank you for loving me like you do, thank you for understanding me, for uplifting me and for reminding me that the best things in life can be simple and understated.  We’ve traveled far together, suffered the brunt of academia together, hugged Mushable Pot Belly Monkeys together, laughed, cheered and cried together and we continue to do so despite being so far away from each other now.  To you babe, thank you for everything, and thank you for being the best person in my life.  Happy Valentine’s Day, Happy Monkey Year and Happy Victory to Arsenal!

To all of you who continue to visit this blog, thank you again.  May we write and talk for many more years to come.

恭喜發財: Happy Lunar New Year 2016

Yes, the new Lunar Year is upon us and it’s the Year of the Monkey.  Monkeys rule in so many ways and that’s certainly because they are cute AND clever.  For those of you born in the year of the Monkey, they’re sociable, clever (duh) and adventurous, but prone to suspicion and jealously.  The previous link here states that monkeys are unlucky when it’s their year, but at the same time, points out that monkeys are gonna get rich somehow.  Hopefully not by an elaborate ponzi scheme that heralds economic doom (cough cough MADOFF).  This year however will be the first where GF and I will celebrate Lunar New Year apart, and it’s hard.  I’ve made my parents standard dumplings, the traditional food for the New Year and chances are I’ll be avoiding the Super Bowl today.  To all of you guys, love life, be prosperous and have a Happy Lunar New Year!   新年快樂!

R.I.P. Maurice White (1941 – 2016)

The mind and beat behind Earth, Wind and Fire has left us on 2/3/2016.  Some of the songs he helped create were not just mere pop hits, but inspirational anthems for a generation of people.  I never owned an EWF album but I was always on my toes when a song would pop up in the radio.  Fantasy, September, Shining Star and others were full of powerhouse brass, heart-pounding bass work and singing that literally touched the Gods.  Maurice White was a part of all of that and more.  He even helped produce an Anime soundtrack for Gatchaman’s 1994 OVA.  White and his band are a force of nature, and I hope his passing can be a way for us all to see that he didn’t leave this plane, but that he returned to the force that bore him many moons ago.  Remember the man, and definitely hit up his songs below.  Rest in Peace Maurice.  What you gave to us was truly a fantasy in the best sense.

Naika Reviews “Black Coal, Thin Ice”

black-coal-thin-ice-2014-diao-zinan-01 resize

Hailed as a triumph in Berlin and a throwback to 1940’s American film-noir, Diao Yinan’s Black Coal, Thin Ice is a simmering story of lust, murder and despair that comes to a boil in sparks of absurd brilliance.  With a haunting performance from female lead Gwei Lun-Mei and the hard-boiled gumshoe trope nailed down perfectly by Liao Fan, Diao’s film is an auteur’s delight as it masterfully weaves many dark threads under the frigid desolation of Northern China.
